"Her blood sugar was extremely high."
Nurse Yolanda Green works at the Christus Linwood School Based Health Center. In addition to her blood sugar, Yolanda found Shatrina had other symptoms including excessive thirst and lethargy.
"She did have diabetes type II."
Shatrina was hospitalized for seven days after the diagnosis. Caught early at the Christus on-campus clinic.
"So, by her sports physical it helped... I say maybe even saved her life."
Today, Shatrina manages her disease... Helped in large part by the Christus location at her school.
"Every day before lunch i go to the health center and check my blood sugar."
Shatrina's steps are stronger now. Because she knows there are doctors and social workers on site... If she needs them.
"It feels ok 'cause i have someone to talk to about it... And they know what i go through and they can be there for me."
