The City of Shreveport is taking steps to develop retail shops and recreational spaces in a bayou area in downtown Shreveport.

Mayor Cedric Glover says the Cross Bayou Cooridor has untapped possibilities for the city and northwest Louisiana.

Thanks to a planning grant from the EPA, The City of Shreveport can look at different ways to use the waterfront property.

It's connected to the Red River and it goes through of downtown Shreveport.

Mayor Glover says the area could be turned into a signature development.

"The vision for Cross Bayou is that it would be an area that would ultimately end up containing, I guess what you could call the three R's,” says Mayor Glover. “And that would be residential development, recreational development, and retail development."

Monday afternoon, the city organized a visioning forum at the Shreveport Convention Center.

Consultants were able to hear ideas from the community on how to redevelop the area.

"We don't want to craft a vision statement,” says Mart Black, the lead consultant for the project. “We want people to tell us what should go in the vision statement, and from that information, yea, we'll make one, but it's going to have their ideas in it."

Those at the meeting voted on different uses, like transportation, recreation and housing.

But consultants warn, these developments won't happen overnight.

"Ultimately, there's a lot of things that are going to have to take place before this site is redevelop,” says Black. “And it's going to take a while."

While the vision phase may only take a year, development for the property will take 10 to 15 years, considering the amount of environmental work that will have to be done.

In the fall, the planning team will have follow up meetings to go over the vision statement and get more input from the community.
