The first day of school is done in Desoto Parish..

Administrators say this year, hundreds of thousands of dollars will be invested in improving ACT scores.

The high schools have ACT mastery classes.

Three ACT coaches have been hired, as part of a $348,000 contract.

The goal is to get every student to score an 18 or higher. That's the score the state deems students college ready. Its also the minimum score the school system needs to get points toward its state performance score.

If students score a 20 or higher on ACT, they're eligible for the state's TOPS scholarship.

The next ACT test date is Sept. 13.

You have to register by Aug. 8,  or pay a late fee and register by Aug. 22.
