A local school system is supplying teachers with guns this school year. In Carthage, Texas all public schools will have armed staff members.

It's called the "Guardian Plan." A group of teachers and other staff members were selected to be "guardians." They’ll carry concealed handguns on campus. They all had to go through intensive training and psychological exams.

New signs went up Wednesday at all five of the schools in the district. The signs say staff may be armed to protect students.

The district's superintendent says it takes law enforcement about three to five minutes to respond to an incident, so the "guardians" are in place to respond immediately.

The school system surveyed parents and community members. 80% of them approve the program and 85% of faculty in the school system.

The Gary Independent School District is also implementing the program this year.
