You now access to a free, online tool that can help you search recall information by the Vehicle Identification Number before buying a car, truck or motorcycle.

The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is requiring automakers and motorcycle manufacturers to provide the new service to consumers.

Director of the Louisiana Attorney General's Public Protection Division Sanettria "Sam" Pleasant said, "Owners and potential buyers alike will now be able to identify whether a safety recall affects their vehicle, using the NHTSA's free online search at SaferCar.gov. This is extremely important for consumer safety and purchasing decisions."

With the new VIN search feature, you will be able to tell whether a specific vehicle is subject to a recall and whether the vehicle has been appropriately serviced.  The new search feature will also be available on the automotive safety website www.safercar.gov.
