Funeral services announced for beloved Bossier sheriff

Funeral services for former Bossier Parish Sheriff Vol Dooley, 87, who died Monday will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 15, 2014, at Cypress Baptist Church, 4701 Palmetto Road in Benton. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the church.


Dooley was appointed to Bossier’s highest office in  by former Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards, after the May1976 death of eight-term Bossier Sheriff lWillie Waggonner.  In December of that same year, Dooley was elected to serve out the three remaining years of Waggonner’s term.  Dooley was re-elected in 1979 and 1983, but was defeated in 1987.


His career in law enforcement began when Dooley was 23 and he joined Troop G of the Louisiana State Police. He was a state trooper until 1954, leaving to become a Bossier Parish Sheriff’s deputy.


 As a state trooper, Dooley became proficient in the technical areas of fingerprinting and photographic equipment, an expertise he brought to the sheriff's department. After he left the sheriff's department, Dooley worked in security for the Port of Shreveport.


In his last year as sheriff from 1987 to 1988, Dooley was president of the Northwest Division of the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement, an agency created under the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 to direct federal funds to local and state law enforcement entities with the goal of making them more effective in protecting the citizenry.


Dooley was preceded in death by his youngest son, Vol "Bubba" Dooley, III and is survived by his wife Ruth; daughter Patricia "Patsy" D. Davidson Netherland; sons, Steven Norris "Steve" Dooley and wife Teresa Ford Dooley and James Michael "Mike" Dooley and wife Donna Carter Dooley. In addition, he is survived by three stepsons, Autry Brown, Dennis Brown and Ricky Brown.
