With the new Sam's Club opening its doors in Bossier City today, NBC 6 got an update on two other developments: the Kroger Marketplace in north Bossier City and the Walmart in north Caddo Parish.

A Walmart Supercenter is being built off of Highway 1, behind Taco Bell.

Caddo Parish Commissioner Lyndon Johnson expects the store to attract more businesses to build around it; just like the Trejo’s restaurant that's under construction across the street.

"We have a strip that's already been constructed that has a fitness center in it,” says Johnson. “It's already up and running. There's a lot of potential in that area."

The project was postponed for a short time due to flooding concerns, but it's now back on track. It’s scheduled to be completed in late 2015.

"They ran into a little elevation issues on drainage, so they have to do some additional drainage work to make sure the people downstream from them don't get flooded out on heavy rains," says Johnson.

Since the store is off of a busy state highway, the commission has set aside money to build a connecting road.

"The residents that are in the Lakeview, Martin Luther King area and along Roy Road, they won't have to go all the way to Highway 1 to come across,” says Johnson. “They'll be able to come up Roy Road and turn into the Walmart."

Across the Red River in north Bossier City, officials had to look at doing the same: adding a new road for a new store.

"Ultimately, the design is to alleviate traffic congestion as a result of Kroger coming on board or any other development in the future," says Mark Natale, Bossier City Spokesperson.

Natale says two roads will be built to get to the Kroger Marketplace off of Airline Drive.

Phase I is George Dement Boulevard, which will go from Airline Drive right into the Kroger parking lot.

Phase II is a traffic relief road that will run behind the Kroger and Home Depot.

"In totality, phase I and phase II, they should wrap up in about a year,” says Natale. “We should have those roads in place in about a year in time for Kroger will begin their construction of the development."
