A long time vacant building in downtown Shreveport is being turned into condos.

The old Bell South Building, located in the 600 block of Crockett Street is now owned by Scott and Jack Harkey. They bought the building back in 2013. The idea surfaced when Jack wanted to return living downtown. Scott owns Bearing Service and Supply and Jack is a coach at Sword Sports.

"We have a lot, a lot of big plans, a lot of dreams that we'd like to do with the property,” said Scott Harkey.   “As far as finishing out the two floors of 12 condos, it won’t be that difficult because most of the main bones are in place. All of the construction work been done, the electrical, the plumbing.

The 27,000 square foot building was appraised for $1.8 million before the Harkeys bought it. The previous owner completed demolition and some construction, but simply ran out of money to finish the renovation.

The Harkeys have renamed the building “The Southern Bell,” in honor of its heritage. It will have 11 condos, available for rent to own purchase. They range from one, two, and three bedroom units. The Harkeys also hope to have a restaurant move in on the ground floor. The plans call for a gym on the ground floor, and a lounge area and pool on the roof top. There is also office space on the ground floor, available for tenants to rent. Unlike many other downtown condos, the building has its own gated parking lot.

One of the units is complete and furnished. The Harkeys want to rent it to moviemakers. There’s another unfurnished one bedroom condo that’s completely renovated.

The father and son duo hope to complete renovation by April 2015. They are also considering buying a building nearby, in order to open a grocery store for tenants.
