A man is locked up after he allegedly stole dozens of cartons of cigarettes from a Shreveport convenience store.

The burglary happened shortly before 12:30 a.m. Thursday at the Circle K in the 1000 block of Shreveport-Barksdale Hwy.

Ronald Alexander, 48, is accused of entering the store and distracting the clerk before making his way into the secured inventory room. Alexander allegedly filled a large with 40 cartons of cigarettes before fleeing the scene of the crime.

Officers later attempted to pull Alexander over near the intersection of Stoner Ave. and Creswell Ave.  He refused to stop at first but eventually abandoned the car and fled on foot.

After a brief pursuit Alexander was arrested and booked into the Shreveport City Jail.

Alexander was charged with one count of simple burglary as well as one count of felony theft in connection with a theft of goods from the Circle K in the 1900 block of Centenary Blvd.

Investigators say additional criminal charges could be filed against Alexander.
