Louisiana House Bill 236 now gives the state debt collection office the power to collect money owed state agencies by taking gambling winnings.
Now the Office of Debt Recovery and the casinos have to devise a computer database to check the names of winners against the names of people who owe debts.

The new system will first target parents behind on child support.

Later the system could be used to collect other debts owed to the state.  The bill goes into effect Aug. 1.
