Suspect faces charges in overnight shooting in west Shreveport

 A Shreveport man sits behind bars this afternoon following his alleged role in a shooting which sent another man to the hospital Wednesday night.


Cornelius Jackson, 21, was booked into the Shreveport City jail after Shreveport police nvestigated the shooting on Portland Avenue.


Just after 9:30 p.m. Wednesday (July 23, 2014),  Shreveport Police patrol officers were called to the 2300 block of Portland Avenue relative to a shooting there. 


Upon arrival, officers learned 18-year-old Sam Coleman Jr. was suffering a single gunshot wound to the lower back.  Coleman was transported by the Shreveport Fire Department to University Health Medical Center for his injuries, which were considered non-life threatening. 


Shreveport Police Violent Crimes detectives were notified and responded to the scene.  During preliminary investigation, authorities gathered information indicating Coleman was shot following a physical altercation involving him and a known suspect, who fled the scene following the shooting. 


Jackson, of the 2300 block of Portland Avenue, was detained by patrolmen at the scene of the crime following a brief foot pursuit.  Information was gathered linking Jackson to the shooting. 


It was alleged Jackson provided the weapon to the suspect who allegedly shot Coleman.  The weapon, a small caliber handgun, was recovered at the scene of the crime.  Jackson was subsequently transported to Shreveport Police headquarters where he was interviewed by detectives. 


Following the interviews, Jackson was charged with principle to attempted second degree murder along with an additional charge of resisting arrest.  Jackson was booked into the Shreveport City Jail.
