Many in the ArkLaTex are getting their meal ready for Thursday, maybe cooking a dessert, or preparing a turkey.

However, some in Texarkana volunteered their day to prepare a feast for those in need.

On Thursday, the Center of Hope Thanksgiving Meal will be served.

It'll be the 15th year that the Salvation Army has hosted it.

The day before Thanksgiving is a busy one for those at the Salvation Army.

"We are cooking our traditional Thanksgiving meal," said Lieutenant Lacy Parrish. "All the stuff you would find at home."

About 20 volunteers helped, doing everything from cutting vegetables to baking fresh cornbread.

"The Salvation Army is thankful for the way the community supports us and the way our volunteers step up and we are just so thankful," said Parrish.

Preparing this feast is no easy task. Volunteers spend all day preparing a ton of food including 12 pounds of cornmeal, 10 pounds of onions and at least 6 turkeys. But they say it's all worth it.

"It's wonderful, we have a lot of fun," said first-time volunteer Kitty Nicholson.

For Nicholson, volunteering is what Thanksgiving is all about.

"You just give and you enjoy it," said Nicholson. "That way you can give back to the community, give back to those less fortunate."

Getting everything ready may be a lot of work, but knowing that children and parents will have a warm meal this holiday, is time well spent.

And for that, the Salvation Army is honored.

"I'm just really thankful to see the people come out and prepare the meal so that they can give back to the community, so the residents can have a sit-down meal and share together as a family," said Parrish.

There are two seatings.

The first is for the residents at the Center of Hope

Then at 5:30pm dinner will be served for anyone in need of a hot meal.

More than 100 people are expected, which those at the Salvation Army say is consistent with previous years.
