work zone safety
Put down the phones and pay attention! That's the message from Louisiana State Police and Louisiana DOTD.
This week is National Work Zone Awareness Week.
DOTD officials encourage drivers to pay attention and obey speed limits in work zones, like E. 70th Street.
In 2012, the Fatality Analysis Reporting System shows Louisiana had 661 injuries and 12 fatalities in work zones.
Statistics suggest those injuries are due to speed, so state troopers run radar to stop speeders.
"You know, when they're out there, they're closing lanes, changing traffic patterns, so it's just really important to avoid the distracted driving and pay attention to what’s going on on the road," says Susan Stafford, Spokesperson for Louisiana DOTD.
"What they're doing is a dangerous job to begin with, so just, you know, show them a little respect, pay attention to them," says Trooper Brett Davis, Public Information Officer for Louisiana State Police.
Troopers want to remind drivers that traffic fines are doubled in work zones.
