SHREVEPORT, La. – The Centenary men’s basketball team picked up a 70-67 win on Sunday afternoon over Schreiner University. The victory moves to the Gents to 8-8 overall and 3-3 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Mountaineers, who were tied for the top spot in the conference, fall to 9-9 and 5-2 in the league.
Jonathan Blount paced the Maroon and White with 19 points. The Shreveport, La., native knocked down perhaps the biggest shot of the game draining a three-pointer with 14 seconds remaining to extend the Gents’ narrow one lead advantage to 69-65. The point total moves the senior to 1,239 career points and extends his career, double-digit performance streak to 45 games played.
Donovan Williams tabbed in 12 points – his first in double figures since Jan. 3 at Millsaps. Caden Cheramie added 10 points marking his first since Jan. 12 at Colorado College. James Sapp led the way on the glass with seven rebounds.
The Gents which led by one at the half marched the lead out to as many as 10 points (47-37) with 12:37 remaining in the contest. The lead was the largest of the game for Centenary. The extension came off an 18-9 run. Blount capped the spurt with a trey – one of one he hit on the night.
Schreiner began to chip away at the Maroon and White’s lead and clipped the lead down to as few as a point on three occasions with the last coming with 1:10 left to play.
AJ Myres posted 18 points to lead SU in the outing. Wes Miller added 15 points with 10 coming from Maverick Harris. Miller and Hollis Robinson each grabbed seven rebounds to lead the squad.
Schreiner finished the game shooting 38 percent from the field and connected on 80 percent of its shots from the free throw line.
Centenary shot just less than 49 percent of its shots from the field – its best mark since shooting nearly 59 percent against Dallas on Jan. 10.
The Gents return to action on Friday, Jan. 31 as they travel to Texas Lutheran. Tip is slated for 6 p.m.
