Centenary downs Schreiner, heads to SCAC championship

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Centenary men’s basketball team advances the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title game following a 74-66 win over Schreiner University. The Gents meet top-seeded and defending SCAC Champion Trinity at Noon on Sunday, March 2.

The title game appearance marks the first for the Maroon and White since 1990 when the Gents faced the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in the Trans America Athletic Conference.

Jonathan Blount led all scorers with 38 points in the victory. The conference’s single-season scoring leader moved to ninth all-time in conference with 1,549 points surpassing Joe Nixon of DePauw University. The Shreveport, La., senior, who was named SCAC Co-Player of the Year following the contest, also sits eighth in school history with in scoring.

James Sapp grabbed a team-best 11 rebounds in the victory.

Trailing by nine points at the intermission, Centenary used a 20-10 run to open the second half and grab its first lead since the 9:47 mark of the opening 20 minutes of the contest. SU would reclaim the lead, but again the Gents surged back and took a 58-57 lead with 7:48 left to play and never trailed again the remainder of the way. 

The Maroon and White grabbed its largest lead 66-58 with 5:34 remaining on a pair of Blount free throws. The trio of Blount, Caden Cheramieand Brooks Pawsat knocked down eight consecutive shots from the charity stripe to secure the win. The Gents hit 88.5 percent from the line for the afternoon.

Centenary finished the night shooting 45.8 percent from the field including a 41.2 clip from behind the arc.  

AJ Myres led the Mountaineers with 21 points while Maverick Harris added 11 points along with a team-best seven rebounds.
