SHREVEPORT, La. (Courtesy Centenary) – Senior night provided plenty of excitement for the fans that gathered to send off Jonathan Blount and Jairus Browning as the duo broke Centenary men’s basketball single-game records en route to a 107-79 win over Open Bible College on Tuesday evening.
Blount set the single-game, scoring record with 53 points breaking former teammate Maxx Nakwaasah’s record of 51 set on Jan. 16, 2012 against East Texas Baptist. The mark was two points shy of tying the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference single-game record of 55 held by Eric Ochel of Sewanee.
Browning toppled the single-game record for the program and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference dishing out 17 assists. The Palm Beach, Fla., native logged 11 assists in the opening 20 minutes including four of the Gents’ first five possessions.
In his final night on the Gold Dome floor, Blount set the SCAC record for free throws made and attempted in single-game going 19 for 22 from the stripe breaking the old marks of 18 and 21.
The team’s total century mark marked the first time the program has posted 100-plus points since Jan. 19, 2010 against Southwestern Assemblies of God (108-65).
Kendall Demouchet joined Blount in double figures with 19 points while James Sapp grabbed eight rebounds in the victory. The double figure scoring effort is the13th on the campaign for the freshman from Lafayette, La. The eight boards mark the 11th time this season that Sapp has paced the Gents on the board.
The victory is the eighth for the Maroon and White in its last nine outings and is the ninth home win this season. The 28-point win marks the largest margin of victory this season for the Gents surpassing the previous mark of 20 also against the Bruins earlier this season.
Centenary returns to action on Friday, Feb. 21 as it closes out the regular season at Austin College. Tip is slated for 6 p.m.
