Eagles Come Up Short In Late Inning Rally vs #13 Texas Wesleyan

Texarkana, TX - TAMUT came back from an eleven run deficit with the winning run at the plate but came up short 11-8 to #13 Texas Wesleyan University.

RHP, Jason Jones (SR/Katy, TX) received the start in the midweek non-conference game against #13 Texas Wesleyan University. The last time TWU and the Eagles faced each other was in 2016 in the NAIA Opening Round when TAMUT came out on top 8-4 and knocked Texas Wesleyan out of the Regional.

The TWU Rams came to play on Tuesday night as they opened the first inning with a 4 run inning. The Rams hit 2 homeruns in the 1st to go up 4-0 on TAMUT.

TWU power would continue in the top of the 2nd inning as they plated one run that came from a solo homerun for a 5-0 lead.

Jason Jones would settle in for the 3rd and 4th inning tossing back-to-back scoreless innings for the Eagles.

Yet again, Texas Wesleyan blasted their 4th homerun of the game off Jones to take a 7-0 lead in the top of the 5th inning. Jones would give up a single following the homerun and would be relieved by Caleb Dunn (FR/Dierks, AR). Dunn allowed a double in the inning to score another run of Jones'.

In the top of the 6th, TWU added more runs to their big lead with 3 runs in the inning. The Rams hit their 5th homerun of the game to take a big 11-0 lead on the Eagles.

Taylor McMackin (FR/Hawaii Kai, HI) entered in relief of Dunn in the top of the 7th inning. McMackin recorded two outs in the 7th but gave up a single and walked a batter before being relieved by Ethan Davis (JR/Midlothian, TX). TAMUT would plate 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th to put the score at 11-2. Cade Thomason (JR/Oak Grove, LA) reached first on a walk. George Gugino (JR/Midwest City, OK) and Alex Kugler (FR/Texarkana, TX) had back-to-back hit by pitches to load the bases. Madison Roberts (SO/Harpersville, AL) would pinch hit for the Eagles and would rip a 2 RBI double down the right field line to put the Eagles on the board.

Ethan Davis would go back out for the Eagles and toss the 8th inning, giving up 1 hit, and struck out a batter. In the bottom of the inning, Eagles would begin to chip away on Texas Wesleyan by adding 4 runs to put the score at 11-6. Cade Davis (SR/Lubbock, TX) got the inning going with a single to center. Cameron Frost (SR/Olympia, WA) reached safely on a fielding error by TWU. Cade Thomason doubled to deep left fied to drive in an RBI. George Gugino doubled to deep right center for 2 RBI's and Alex Kugler would follow with an RBI single to center for the Eagles final run of the inning.

In the top of the 9th, TAMUT would call on Cade Davis to pitch for his 1st appearance of the season. Davis gave up 1 hit in the inning and fanned 2 batters. Eagles would begin to rally in the 9th inning as Darren Alexander (SR/Lubbock, TX) led off the inning with a single to center. Cole Beckham (SO/Texarkana, TX) followed with a shallow single to right. A wild pitch advances runners to 2B and 3B. Austin Vicknair (SR/Paulina, LA) pinch hits for TAMUT and grabs an RBI on a fielder's choice. Cameron Frost hit an RBI single to center to put the score at 11-8. With runners on the corners and two outs, the game tieing run came to the plate but the Eagles rally would come up short with a line out to deep center to end the game.
