SHREVEPORT, La. - C. J. McGill (JR/Tampa, Florida) tossed in a season high of 31 points to lead the no. 12 LSU Shreveport Pilots past the Texas College Steers 92-66 on Thursday night at The Dock in Red River Athletic Conference action. The Pilots improve to 19-6 and 11-4 in the league while Texas College falls to 6-19 and 2-13 in the RRAC.
McGill drained 4-of-8 from beyond the three-point line while making all 11 of his attempts from the charity stripe. "I'm happy for C. J. and his performance tonight," said LSUS coach Kyle Blankenship. "He has struggled the past couple of games, but he definitely got out of that little slump." McGill had scored just two and seven points in his past two games.
Uzonna Akazi (SR/Queens, New York) had a double-double secured by halftime and he finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. "Ooze had a huge first half and gave our team a much needed shot in the arm on both ends," said Blankenship.
"For a period of time, we executed at a very high level," said Blankenship as his team finished shooting 44-percent from the field. "I thought we did a very good job of attacking their defense which led to some easy baskets."
The Pilots' defense wasn't too shabby either as they forced 21 turnovers led by four steals from McGill as the Pilots racked up 25 points off of the Texas College miscues.
Greg Pollins (SR/Texarkana, Texas) had a couple of steals of his own and also netted double digits with 11 points while Benjamin Batts (JR/Saginaw, Michigan) drained a dozen points including a four-point play in the first half as he finished 3-of-8 from downtown.
