MONROE – The Northwestern State baseball team took advantage of several miscues in an 8-6, rain delayed win over Louisiana-Monroe Tuesday night at Warhawk Field to give the Demons their third straight midweek win.
The Warhawks (13-21) tallied seven walks, four hit by pitches, and five wild pitches in the game.
Bret Underwood scored Northwestern State's (19-13) third run in the second inning on a wild pitch from third base. He reached on a walk and took second base when Caleb Dugas was hit by a pitch and both moved up when ULM's shortstop Kodie Tidwell was tagged with an error.
Nathan Lyons led off the second inning with a double to right center field and scored on an infield single from C.J. Webster. Three wild pitches and on hit by pitch later Webster and Joel Atkinson scored.
The Demons added another run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Dugas to score Underwood. Underwood reached on a walk, took second with a stolen base, and reached third on a wild pitch.
ULM answered on a double to left center field from Jacob Stockton that scored Ross Moore.
Each team had two-run home runs in the sixth inning. Dugas reached on a single to left field before Cort Brinson put a line drive over the left field wall to push the lead to 8-4. Chet Simoneaux cut the game to its final score on a homer to left field.
Northwestern State opened the game with a run in the first inning on a double to the right field wall from Underwood that scored Edwin Gomez. Gomez led off the game with a single up the middle on batter earlier.
ULM answered to take lead in the bottom half of the frame with three runs on four hits. Tidwell singled to left center field and took second base on a single to shallow center field from Justin Stawychny two batters later. With two outs, Dalton Herrington doubled to right center field to score both.
Herrington scored on a triple to center field on a triple from Jacob Stockton. Demon centerfielder Underwood looked as if he had a bead on the ball, but he slipped in a soggy outfield.
John Gault started the game for NSU and lasted one inning with three runs allowed on four hits. He had a walk and strikeout. Evan Tidwell (1-0) took the win after took the mound in the second inning and worked three innings. He allowed one run on one hit with two walks and three strikeouts.
Cameron Brewer came on in the fifth inning and pitched two innings with one earned run allowed on three hits. Joey Parrack shutdown the Warhawk lineup on two innings pitched, and had one base runner from an error by Brinson.
Louisiana-Monroe started Alex Dumain who lasted four innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits and three walks. He uncorked five wild pitches and hit three batters.
Payton Coddou worked 2.2 innings for ULM and allowed two runs on two hits and four walks.
Cort Brinson had three RBIs, two on his home run in the sixth inning, on two hits in four at-bats. Underwood had one RBI and two runs scored in a 1-for-2 game. Dugas and Webster each added an RBI on one hit apiece.
At least one Demon reached base in every inning until the eighth frame. NSU had its leadoff runner on a bag in every inning until the seventh.
NSU will take on McNeese State, who is in first place in the Southland Conference standings and one game ahead of NSU. The three-game series will start at 6 o'clock on Friday.
