MARSHALL, Texas – Two big innings for Howard Payne University (11-12; 8-10 ASC) was the difference as they handed the East Texas Baptist University (7-18; 4-14 ASC) baseball team a tough loss ending the three-game series, 12-2. ETBU had pulled to within two, 4-2, after the fourth until a seven-run seventh inning put the game out of reach.
ETBU recorded seven hits in the game and had no errors but couldn’t keep up with Howard Payne’s 19 hits. Howard Payne saw five different ETBU pitchers on the day as Ashley Dukes received the loss falling to 3-4 on the year going 3.2 innings. Matt Lefler went 2.2 innings with three strikeouts and then the game was finished by Cody Pruitt (0.0 innings), Jimmy Russo (0.1 innings), and Ernest Perez (0.1 innings).
Wes Dorough was perfect at the plate going 3-of-3 with one RBI. Josh Sanderson, Jaxon Rader, Tyler Bates, and Josh Warbington all collected hits. Bates had the other RBI for ETBU.
ETBU came out strong in the bottom of the first inning scoring the first run of the game. Rader singled as the second batter of the game and then stole second to be put into scoring position. Dorough picked up his first hit of the game and only RBI as he dropped a single to centerfield allowing Rader to come in.
After two scoreless innings of pitching from Dukes, Howard Payne crossed the plate four times in the fourth inning to take a three run lead, 4-1. ETBU answered in the bottom of the inning as Bates doubled to left center field bringing in Dorough for what would be the last run of the game. No runs were scored in the fifth inning and then Howard Payne extended their lead to three runs, 5-2, adding a run in the sixth. A seven-run seventh did in ETBU as the game ended after seven innings, 12-2.
ETBU travels to Tyler, Texas, facing the University of Texas-Tyler in a three-game series next Friday and Saturday.
