Shreveport-Bossier tennis team plays for national title in Hawaii
Local Season-The team was formed in May 2013 and our local Mixed Doubles season started in June of 2013. Our Host Facility is the Bossier Tennis Center and the team name is Seasoned and Served. In the local season we competed against 4 other teams. We played each other twice so we had 8 matches and we finished the season undefeated at 8-0. The win at the local level secured our spot to compete at the State tournament.
State Competition- The State Tournament was held in Lake Charles, September 13-15, 2013. There were 5 teams in our division so we had 4 matches. We played teams from New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Mandeville/Covington and Lafayette. We won our division 4-0 and then we competed in the finals against Lake Charles. We won 1 court and lost the other 2 in very close tie breaks! We found out directly after our match that Louisiana got the wild card to go to Sectionals. So even though we didn’t win the finals we still got to go to Sectionals.
Southern Section-There are 9 states in our Southern Section-Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. One of these 9 states always gets a wild card to send a 2nd team to sectionals to make it an even 10 teams with 2 divisions, so 5 teams will compete against each other in both divisions. Fortunately for our team, Louisianagot the wild card this year! The Southern Sectionals tournament was in Mobile, AL Oct 11-13, 2013. We competed against teams from Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and South Carolina. We won our division with a 3-1 record. We played Tennessee in the finals and lost 1-2. We won 1 court and lost 1 court outright and 1 in a very close 3rd set tie break. So once again we missed being champions by just a few points. We went away from this weekend disappointed that we didn’t finish 1st to win a spot at Nationals but we were very proud of how we played and how far we had gone!
Nationals-In mid February I got a phone call from our State league coordinator and he said Louisiana had gotten the wild card to go to nationals and he asked if I could rally the troops to play at the National Tournament in Maui, Hawaii on April 11-13th. At that point it had been 4 months since we had competed at sectionals so I thought I would have a difficult time rounding up 6 people who could go and represent Louisiana at the tournament. This team always amazes me! When the call went out 11 of our 14 team members got on board to go! It has been a whirl wind since that call, as we only had 2 months to get ready to go. We formed committees and began thinking of ways that we could get our local tennis community involved in helping to support our team for this opportunity to go to Nationals.
Fundraisers-We hosted a team doubles tennis tournament at our host facility, the Bossier Tennis Center on March 21-23. It was a Hawaiian theme with a fun Wooden Racquet 10 point tie break competition to kick off the tournament. We had a DJ all weekend; meals were donated by Rotolo’s and Olive Garden. We had a auction and a Radar Gun serving competition. Just a fun weekend for our local community to come out and be a part of to help support our team!
We raised over $8,000.00 in sponsorships and made around $6,200.00 on the tournament. We are currently $48.00 dollars short of our goal of $15,000.00.
