Waskom High likes to keep the ball on the ground.
“We’re a run first football team. We return 4 1,000 yard rushers so we feel we’re going to be able to run the ball extremely well,” said Head Coach Whitney Keeling.
Their run landed them in the state semi’s last year. Undefeated the year prior and 14 and 1 last season a target’s made itself at home on the back of the Wildcats jersey.
“We were undefeated so every team wanted to knock off the undefeated team, but this year I think we’re really going to get everybody’s best game,” said senior Kevin Johnson.
They return 15 starters including the four thousand yard rushers and bring back Chandrin Aime, who was out last season due to an injury, and is ready to make up for lost time. He wants what his teammates want.
“Go to state. I’m just ready for the season to start,” said junior Chandrin Aime.
This year staying healthy is at the top of their list.
“Our first goal is to make the playoffs, once you get in the playoffs anything can happen. We want to make sure that we go into the game plan as healthy as possible and hopefully we’ll make a good run at it,” said Coach Keeling.
Before the team thinks too far ahead, they’re just glad football’s finally here, this season’s 9 months in the making.
"They workout just about everyday. Four days a week all summer, then they're playing 7 on 7, obviously whenever you're able to come out, put the pads on, and get back into the aspect of real practices is when it gets exciting," said Coach Keeling.
You can catch Waskom in action in just a few weeks when they take on Simms Bowie on August 30th.
