Accused child predator waives bond hearing

A detention hearing for the man suspected of being a child predator was waived this morning in U.S. District Court in Monroe.

A detention hearing for the man suspected of being a child predator was waived this morning in U.S. District Court in Monroe.

Chris Nixon was arrested by federal agents with ICE Monday, four hours after an alert was put out that he might be around Shreveport or somewhere in north Louisiana.

In federal court, a detention hearing is required to determine whether bond with be set on a prisoner, and if so, how much. Nixon, however, will continue to be held in custody due to probable cause.

Ouachita Parish Police Jury member Walt Caldwell was appointed as Nixon lawyer, but said he was not able to comment on the case at this time.

Jackson Parish Sheriff Andy Brown told KTVE NBC 10 in Monroe, NBC 6 News’ sister station, that Nixon was taken into custody at a home near Jonesboro.  Authorities say a video shows Nixon molesting a child.

They believe Nixon made the video in 2012 - but they were not seen by law enforcement until recently --- when another child predator was caught with the videos on his computer. Investigators were able to track down his location with G-P-S data in the video.

After the alert that made Nixon’s picture public, authorities said they received almost 50 calls from the public.

No new court date has been set, and Nixon continues to be held in the Union Parish Jail.
