Caddo Parish Athletes will have access to EKG

Athletes in one local school system will now have access to a potentially lifesaving test. The Caddo Parish School Board approved giving athletes the opportunity to receive EKG testing.

Brandon Goyne died from an abnormal heart condition earlier this year at baseball practice. Now his mother is making it her mission to prevent this same tragedy from happening again.

Debbie Goyne started the Brandon Goyne Foundation. Her goal is for all school districts and colleges to require athletes to have an EKG.

Through her foundation she made EKGs available in Elysian Fields and Waskom middle and high schools. The Elysian Fields Booster Club covers the costs for athletes who can’t afford it. In Waskom it’s a part of the school district’s budget. That allows every athlete to have access to it.

Now athletes, cheerleaders and band members in the Caddo Parish School System will have access to the testing.

Debbie says in the past eight months two young athletes in our area have had sudden cardiac deaths. She believes an EKG could have saved their lives.

Debbie has been in contact with Bossier Parish School officials to get the testing implemented there as well.

This test is only $15 through the foundation, because of a partnership with a Houston doctor.
