Caddo Parish Schools have a reason to celebrate

The Louisiana Department of Education recently announced that 10 Caddo schools had been removed from the Academically Unacceptable Schools list.

NBC 6 Reporter Nikki Henderson has the story.

The Caddo Parish School Board is breathing a sigh of relief.  This morning President Gerald Dawkins said he wasn’t expecting that many schools to be removed from the AUS list.

Any school that is projected to have an “F” or is failing based on its state standardized testing scores for the previous school year is placed on the AUS list.

In order to be removed from the list there must be an overall improvement in school performance, such as LEAP and ACT scores, which moves the school into a “D” or non failing status.

Tyrone Burton, Principal at Cherokee Park Elementary, said his school has seen major growth over the past three years.

Dr. Dawkins said having these 10 schools removed from the AUS list truly shows that hard work and persistence pays off.

Principal Burton believes Cherokee Park’s success is due to a special system where he meets with his teachers every week to the track students’ progress.
