The father of Joby Ogwyn has confirmed to NBC 6 that his son is safe following an avalanche Friday on Mt. Everest. Joby Ogwyn is a Shreveport native and 1997 graduate of Centenary College. Ogwyn has been preparing to climb Everest and then jump from its summit in a wingsuit, an event scheduled to air on the Discovery Channel (Everest Jump Live) on May 11th.
At least 13 have been confirmed killed in the avalanche. The dead are Sherpa guides believed to be fixing ropes and readying the mountain for climbers. It is unknown if any were hired as crewman for the television special.
Ogwyn's father says his son is now involved with search and rescue on the mountain. The future of the jump is unknown and a statement from the Everest Jump Live website states: 'The immediate priority for Joby and the team is to assist the search and rescue efforts in any way possible.'
