Breast cancer survivor becomes crusader

NBC 6 is proud to join the fight against breast cancer by sponsoring Race for the Cure, in both Texarkana and Shreveport.

One local crusader reminds us how important it is to overcome adversity by following your passion.

Suzanne Sims spends much of her free time volunteering in the Komen office in Shreveport.

“Today is a gift and I have 24 hours of time to do with this day whatever I can, and whatever God intends for me to do,” said Sims.  “I don’t take one single day for granted.”

Not only is she the Board President for the Susan G. Komen Northwest Louisiana Affiliate, she’s also a survivor.  In 2012, the wife and mother of two boys found out she had breast cancer.

“It was beyond terrifying.  I don’t even know what word is bigger than terrifying,” recalled Sims. “What does this mean for me?  And what if I’m not here?  And how will that impact my mortality?"

Suzanne’s family provided support and encouragement as she underwent surgery and radiation.

"In that process I realized I needed to be involved in something that was positive about breast cancer because I'm a control freak and I was out of control of my cancer," said Sims.

That is what led her to Komen.

"It means to me personally an opportunity to be around other people who understand the path that I've walked and also an opportunity for me to actively do something to demonstrate to them that I'm in the battle with them,” Sims reflected.

As she prepares for the affiliate’s biggest event of the year, Race for the Cure, Suzanne’s not just fighting for her life, she’s fighting for a better life for others.

“I would love for there to be a day when we could race just because we want to get together to have fun,” Sims added. “Not because we desperately in need of resources and money to fight this horrible disease."

You can join Suzanne and NBC 6 at this year’s Race for the Cure in Shreveport.  It takes place Saturday, November 2 at Mall St. Vincent.  Click here to join Team NBC 6.
