CMN: Athletic Club offers Kids Gym program

CHRISTUS Louisiana Athletic Club finds a fun way to get kids moving.
You want your kids to be active but pulling them away from televisions, tablets and video games can be quite a challenge. CHRISTUS Louisiana Athletic Club has figured out a fun way to get kids moving.  They’ve made it convenient for parents, too.

The Kids Gym program at CHRISTUS Louisiana Athletic Club in Bossier City makes getting in shape a family affair.

“The parents pay for their membership and the kids come for free and they usually have a blast," said Jason ‘Soupy’ Campbell, Kids Gym Coach.

For two hours on Monday through Thursday evenings, Campbell keeps the kids moving.

“They're stuck in school all day too at this point so it's great for them to come here, burn off some energy.  After we're done in the gym, we usually go upstairs do a little bit on the track and throw some exercises in there," said Campbell.

This year the kids even get to climb the new rock wall, purchased with money raised from last year's Children's Miracle Network telethon.

“They'll play dodge ball.  They'll do old school P.E. activities like run the lines, a lot of things where they're not necessarily thinking I have to just run laps and it's boring," said Amy Rich, club member and parent.

Coach Soupy wants to make it fun and lay the groundwork for a lifetime of fitness.

“We want to make sure they're doing that right, at least getting the right idea so one day they'll be able to do it on their own without any supervision," added Campbell.

Until they can workout without supervision, parents say Kids Gym is the perfect solution.

“As the kids get older and they're still not able to be left at home by themselves, it's some place they can come and they're active. You don't have to worry about them and you can still get in some good exercise,” said Rich.  “That's something that's hard to find."

Both CHRISTUS Louisiana Athletic Club locations in Shreveport (9425 Healthplex Drive) and Bossier (2541 Viking Drive) have Kids Gym programs, with weekday evening and Saturday morning hours.

Kids Gym is for children ages 5 to 12.

They also have daycare for younger children.

NBC 6 is your official Children's Miracle Network station.

You can catch the telethon on June 1, 2014, on NBC 6.
