Defenders of Liberty Air Show returns

The Defenders of Liberty Air Show returns to Barksdale Air Force Base for the first time in two years.
The Defenders of Liberty Air Show returns to Barksdale Air Force Base for the first time in two years.

Federal sequester cuts forced the show to be cancelled in 2013.

On April 26 & 27, 2014, the public enjoy aerial entertainment for free.

Even with a year off, organizers say hard work has been put into this year’s show.

"It takes a full year of planning to get this base ready for the air show, and the team grows as we go, until now,” says Major Warren Carroll. “This weekend you'll see all of team Barksdale out here, the 6,000 airmen stationed here at Barksdale and many more helping to put this air show on."

NBC 6 got the first look at one of the Thunderbirds taking a practice run.

“They're the ones in the F-16s and the red, white and blue that fly within three feet, flying hundreds of miles per hour and demonstrate the precision of the U.S. Air Force."

With a big crowd coming to see the Thunderbirds, that means lots of traffic.

"We were talking people you know in the six figures; 100,000 possibly,” says Mark Natale, Spokesperson for Bossier City Police. “You know, you're at least looking at least tens of thousands of cars, and when you have that many coming and going in one place and one day, you know there's going to be some delays."

Natale says about 15 officers will be at gates on the base to tackle heavy traffic. He’s asking the public to have patience getting to and from the show.

"The main thing we ask people is to be patient,” says Natale. “It's going to be well worth the wait to get inside and see the show, but just bear with us and keep in mind that it's going to draw a lot of folks."

The public will be able to come through the main gate (on Barksdale Boulevard) and the north gate (off of North Gate Road).

Once the show is over, all traffic will go out through the main gate.

Police say you need to know which direction you’re going after the show, so you can get in the appropriate lane.
