Desoto couple dead in apparent murder suicide

Gwennette Salley and Michael Scott Salley both died from gunshot wounds

A Desoto Parish couple is dead after domestic violence leads them down a dead-end road.

Caddo Parish authorities said Gwennette Salley, 39, and Michael Scott Salley, 43, were both found deceased inside Gwennette Salley’s SUV around 5:54 p.m. The SUV was in a clearing off a dirt road in the 17,000 block of John Gin’s Road in southwest Caddo Parish.

Deputies said Gwennette was picking up her daughter from daycare in Stonewall when a motorist saw Michael Salley jump in Gwennette’s SUV with a shotgun and the couple drove off. The driver followed the couple to the Caddo Parish line and called Desoto Parish deputies. Five Desoto parish deputies along with one Caddo Parish deputy found the couple driving on John Gin’s Road in rural Caddo Parish and followed then slowly down off onto mud road.

Caddo parish deputies said the road ended in a clearing. When the deputies surrounded the SUV and attempted to get out of their cars, they said they heard three gun shots.

“It happened within seconds,” said Caddo Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Cindy Chadwick.

“As they were getting out, they didn’t pull right up to the car.  They were a distance behind the car. But he was in the clearing, and they were getting out to approach the car. As they were getting out, that’s when they were heard three gun shots. We’re talking seconds, not even minutes.”

Deputies said the SUV had tinted windows, making it difficult to figure what happened in those last couple seconds. When they approached the SUV, they found both deceased; Gwennette in the driver’s seat and Michael in the passenger’s seat.

Chadwick said Gwennette never entered the daycare. She said there is a history of domestic violence between the couple. They have one daughter together.

The Caddo Coroner’s office picked up both bodies and is investigating the crime scene. Investigators said it appears to be a murder-suicide.
