Firecracker 5K sparks popularity and breaks records

What would the fourth of July be without a morning run? At least that's what the 3,500 plus Firecracker 5K runners thought.

What would the fourth of July be without a morning run? At least that's what the 3,500 plus Firecracker 5K runners thought.

"We just love everyone coming out and doing something healthy before their July fourth festivities," said Matt Brown, Sportsspectrum owner.

The day started off with a half mile fun run for kids, that's before the adults laced up. Some ran for fun, but some ran for prize money.

"We have a feeling it's going to be a fast feel today, and there could be some course records broken," said Brown.

Broken? Try shattered. The top four finishers ran less than a five minute mile. The winner walked away one-thousand dollars richer. Five hundred for winning, and five hundred for breaking the course record. Although hilly, you couldn't have picked a better course on a better day.

"This is an awesome course. It's shaded, you know in the middle of July it can be very hot in LA. It's just a beautiful course," said Brown.

The race continues to gain popularity and officials hope for an even bigger turnout next year.
