Pine was a 1997 graduate of Airline High School.
In a news release, Rodriguez said Pine responded to the area of 7840 Westminster Abbey Blvd in Winter Garden, FL in reference to a possible burglary suspect. On arrival, Pine immediately called out the suspect’s description over the radio and engaged him in an investigatory stop. However, moments later the suspect fled on foot.
Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy Jonathan Scott Pine was shot by a burglary suspect, after responding a call just after midnight this morning, according to Ginette Rodriguez, OCSO public information officer
Pine chased the suspect through the back yard of a residence, when he was shot by the suspect. Pine collapsed due to the injuries. Additional units arrived on scene and began looking for the suspect, who was found deceased, next to a nearby house.
Pine was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center where he died. The deceased suspect was identified as Benjamin Holtermann, 28.
Erica Pugh, 18, who was with the suspect during the initial burglary call, was apprehended in the area. Pugh was interviewed by detectives and subsequently confessed to a recent armed robbery, which occurred in the area of Hiawassee and Old Winter Garden Road. She will be charged with several counts of Burglary of a Conveyance and Grand Theft.
Pine was employed with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office on January 04, 2011 and assigned to the Uniform Patrol Division, Sector III. He is survived by his wife and three young children.
