A recommendation was made to assign Nagin to the federal penitentiary in Oakdale, LA with a report date of Sept. 8. He may be eligible for supervised release after 12 months.

U.S. District Court Judge Ginger Berrigan passed the sentence around 10 a.m. Wednesday shortly after court convened. The sentence is below most expectations and is less than the sentence recommended by a sentencing commission.

In February, a jury deliberated just a few hours before finding Nagin guilty on 20 felony corruption charges, including bribery and money laundering.
The allegations included inappropriate spending using a city credit card, and prosecutors said some of those purchases were items for Nagin’s wife Seletha, who recently filed for bankruptcy protection.
