Fuller Center builds second home in Cedar Grove

Fuller Center's 51st home is under construction

The Fuller Center for Housing of Northwest Louisiana makes the dream of homeownership a reality for a couple in the Cedar Grove neighborhood.

The Fuller Center's 51st home is well underway. Janine and Leroy West are the new homeowners. They've been on the waiting list since Feb. 2013.

"I would call them every single day and worry them. and now its here I'm just so excited," said Janine.

Janine has come a long way. In 2011, she almost died after suffering from a heart attack, and kidney failure.

"I am a miracle walking. The doctors told my pastor it didn't look good for me. I am on life support, I didn't even know I was in the world for a long time. "

Ivan Smith, owner of Ivan Smith Furniture Store, is sponsoring the home. Lee Jeter Sr, executive director of the Fuller Center for Housing, said it's a wise investment.

"These properties are going back on the tax rolls, the citizens are paying taxes, and they are becoming more involved in their communities," said Jeter.

The Fuller Center would like to build 10 to 12 more homes in the Cedar Grove neighborhood, but to make that happen, they need business owners to step forward and sponsor homes.

"We believe it's going to be a win-win for the Cedar Grove," said Jeter.  "We'd just like to see more dedicated citizens sponsors and churches that really care about those that are living at or above the poverty level to step up to sponsor a house or part of a house. "

The couple expects to move into the home by the second week of June.

The is located at 273 E. 72nd Street in Shreveport. There will be a roof raising dedication ceremony Sat. April 12, at 8:30 a.m. If you'd like to volunteer to help build the home, you can come out Saturday or anytime during the week. Just call the Fuller Center at 318-865-1237.
