Fundraiser to benefit local teacher battling cancer

Danielle Lewis, physical education teacher and the head softball coach at Huntington High School is facing surgery and recovery from multiple myeloma.

For 10 years Danielle Lewis has been an educator in Caddo Parish. Friends describe the 34-year-old Lewis as an energetic and upbeat leader. It's a role she has assumed as a physical education teacher and head softball coach at Huntington High School in Shreveport.

Now friends have taken the lead as Lewis was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a blood cancer, last year. They have held fundraisers through individuals and a basketball tournament and now local restaurants are pledging support. McAlister's Deli at E. 70th Street and Youree Drive in Shreveport will donate a portion of sales from 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday, April 17th to help Lewis in her fight.

Reanna Austin with McAlister's Deli says the decision was easy for the restaurant.

"We already do a lot with schools so that's why when we heard about Danielle it really touched us her being a teacher here in Caddo," Austin says.

Lewis is currently traveling 2 days each week to Houston, Texas for chemotherapy and other treatments. She will soon undergo a stem cell surgery which will require a 12 to 15 week recovery in isolation.

Insurance will cover some of the treatment and surgery costs but it will not cover the lodging for recovery and additional associated costs.

If you aren't hungry but would like to donate there will be donation boxes set up at the McAlister's.
