Gold Medal Giver: Bill Lacefield

It can be fun to volunteer, just ask this week's Gold Medal Giver.
It can be fun to volunteer, just ask this week's Gold Medal Giver.

For Bill Lacefield, it's the chance to be a kid once again.

Lacefield volunteers at Sci-Port, and has done so for 14 years.

"A friend of mine had been volunteering here and encouraged me and told me how much fun it was, so I came down and have been here ever since!" said Lacefield.

He's there once a week, doing fun things like explore the wild, brave the high seas, and maybe hang out.

"He's a discovery guide," said Director of Education Lou Papai. "He's trained to travel around the floor, interact with the public and just really play and have a great time."

"I really enjoy working with the kids," said Lacefield. "It's really a lot of fun to watch them play with the experiments and exhibits, but also every now and then they learn something."

With more than 700 hours of volunteer work, staff say Lacefield is an all-star.

"Bill is a really wonderful person," said Papai. "He's here whenever we need him, he's so versatile, he'll do lots of different things. It's important to know the contribution he adds at Sci-Port is valued and not only important but desperately needed and he does that exceptionally well."

Lacefield says he does it, because of the adventure it brings.

"It's just a lot of fun," said Lacefield. "I enjoy mingling with the people, and helping them experience what we have here. We have a real treasure here at SciPort."

Which is why this week's Gold Medal Giver is Bill Lacefield.
