Gold Medal Giver: Marybeth McVie

Volunteering makes a difference for anyone of any age.
Volunteering makes a difference for anyone of any age.

Here at NBC 6 News, we like to honor those who dedicate their time giving a helping a hand.

Each week we nominate someone as a Gold Medal Giver, someone who goes above and beyond to help others.

Some say the greatest gift is a passion to read.

Just ask volunteer and former teacher, Marybeth McVie.

"I still as an adult love to read," said McVie. "I think it's just been a life-long love of mine, and it probably influenced the career choice I made."

Now retired, McVie shares her passion with children at Providence House, reading and doing activities with them once a week.

"Who knows who this man is?" asks McVie to her class.

"Abraham Lincoln!" yells one.

"I just know their minds are little sponges and I love to see the light in their eyes," said McVie.

Spend a few minutes in her class, and you can see the excitement to read in each child she's reading to.

"They love to see her come because she has nice things to work on," said Providence House employee, Yutoriea Smith. "She helps them, motivates them, energizes them and shows them someone else cares, someone else loves them, and that's why we appreciate Ms. McVie."

A reader today, is a leader tomorrow.

"You can see the changes as she comes in," said Smith.

"I just look forward to coming each week and bringing whatever skill or whatever I can to these children and share with them," said McVie.

Which is why this week's Gold Medal Giver is Marybeth McVie.

McVie says her favorite part is seeing the excitement in the children.

She hopes to continue reading and doing activities for as long as she can.

If you would like to volunteer at Providence House, you can visit their website here.

We are always looking for volunteers who dedicate their time to helping others.

If you'd like to nominate someone, please send an e-mail to NBC 6's Jade Cunningham with your nomination (name, where they volunteer).
