Gold Medal Giver - Tellis Everett

Not all gold medalists are Olympians. NBC 6 News honors those who go the extra mile in our community.

Not all gold medalists are Olympians, so NBC 6 News honors those who go the extra mile in our community.

"The volunteer work he does, it's wonderful. We want to let him know it's not unnoticed," said Operations Manager Steven Paeth.

Tellis Everett began volunteering at the Northwest Louisiana Food Bank two years go.

"Kinda quiet, kept to himself," said Paeth. "But when he came to the warehouse, he had a lot of experience and hit the ground running."

He's known to everyone as Mr. Tellis, and sometimes gets confused as being an employee.

Mainly since he's at the Food Bank all day, every day.

"It's so wonderful, very rare to find those types of people," said Paeth. "It means a lot to us that he feels that strongly about what we do."

To Mr. Tellis, volunteering means anything he can do to help.

"I take care of the freezer, I take care of the cooler, and then I do whatever they ask me to do, just make a day of it," said Tellis.

Ask if it seems like work, and he'll say no.

"I just look forward to this every single day," said Tellis. "We're fulfilling a need, and it's very satisfying to me."

Those at the Food Bank admire Mr. Tellis' dedication, and say he should be honored.

"He probably doesn't want the recognition, but I think he really deserves it for what he does here, he's a great asset," said Paeth.

But to Mr. Tellis, the prize is knowing that he's helping those in need.

"I get enough rewards," said Tellis. "Through the people here, it's not about me being honored. It's about me doing what we need to do to feed people."

which is why this week's Gold Medal Giver's award goes to volunteer Tellis Everett.
