Group urges Jenkins to reconsider run for Shreveport mayor

Councilman removed his name from consideration last week citing 'personal reasons' but supporters urge him to continue.

A group called the 'Committee to Recruit Sam Jenkins' is hoping the Shreveport city councilman will reconsider a bid for the Shreveport mayoral seat during the November election.

"We want Sam! We want Sam!" cheered dozens of supporters gathered at a conference room at the downtown Hilton hotel. Jenkins removed his name from consideration last week citing personal reasons.

Supporters including Caddo Commissioner, Ken Epperson and Bishop Fred Caldwell, Sr. believe Jenkins is the right person to fill the seat because of his leadership skills and track record as a commissioner. Jenkins, who did attend the 30-minute closed door session, says he was humbled.

"I want to give this matter prayerful consideration, I want an opportunity to talk further with family, friends and supporters," he said. Jenkins has received hundreds of emails, calls and messages pledging support. He says a decision will come as soon as possible.

"We are here to ask him to reconsider and we trust that he will," says Caldwell Sr.

The election will take place in November. So far Democratic State Representative, Patrick Williams and Evangelist, Melvin Slack, have publicly announced their intent for the seat that will be vacated by Cedric Glover.
