The day after comedy legend and "Fashion Police" co-host Joan Rivers was rushed to a New York hospital, she remains in "serious" condition, according to a statement issued by her daughter, Melissa Rivers, through the Mount Sinai Health System.

Rivers, 81, was undergoing a procedure on her vocal cords Thursday morning at Yorkville Endoscopy when she stopped breathing and was transported to Mount Sinai, according to WNBC, citing sources familiar with the situation. The Fire Department of New York said it transported a woman to Sinai who was either in "respiratory or cardiac arrest."

Melissa Rivers and her 13-year-old son, Cooper, immediately flew from Los Angeles to New York City to be with Rivers.

"My mother would be so touched by the tributes and prayers that we have received from around the world. Her condition remains serious but she is receiving the best treatment and care possible. We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts as we pray for her recovery."

The health crisis capped a very busy week for Rivers, who worked the red carpets at the Video Music Awards and Emmys on Sunday and Monday, taped a special "Fashion Police" episode on Tuesday, and performed stand-up in Manhattan on Wednesday. She was scheduled to perform in New Jersey Friday night.
