Texarkana mourns the loss of former police chief

The hearts of the Texarkana, Arkansas Police Department are heavy this afternoon after losing one of their own.

Former TAPD Police Chief John H. Butler, 85, has died

Butler was appointed Chief of Police in 1972, and later became Director of Public Safety for the City of Texarkana.  He served the Texarkana, Arkansas Police Department from 1956 to 1990. 

During his tenure, Butler served on the Arkansas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training where he helped raise the bar of professionalism throughout Arkansas Law Enforcement ranks.

Throughout his service, Butler proved to be an exceptional Chief who kept in mind the best interests of every citizen in Texarkana, as well as the entire police department His leadership skills, attitude and dedication throughout his tenure has lived on within the TAPD and will forever remain

Funeral services will be at 10 am Monday at First Methodist Church in Locksburg, Ark  Interment will follow at Belleville Cemetery

Visitation will be at 6 p.m. Sunday (Easter) at Wikerson Funeral Home in DeQueen, Ark
