The Bowie-Cass Adult Education & Family Literacy will hold a General Education Development New Student Orientation next month.

The sessions will take place from 8 a.m. until noon and 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2 and Wednesday, Sept. 3 at the TISD Academic Learning Center on 3201 Lincoln Avenue. 

Attendance for both days of the orientation is required.  The session will cover all requirements and expectations of the new 2014 GED program along with career planning and college/workforce information. 

Classes are self-paced, flexible and free.  If you cannot attend this one, New Student Orientations are held year-round on the first Tuesday of every month.

There are nine sites available to assist students:  Atlanta High School; Hughes Springs Public Library; New Boston's Corley Community Center.  In Texarkana, locations include:  Southwest Center; Texarkana Workforce Solutions; Texarkana College; and Women's Recovery Program.

Through a partnership with Texarkana College, an Accelerate Texas Innovative Grant has been received for 2013-15 to increase participation and success of students in workforce training programs.  Funded by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Texarkana College will receive $325,000 to assist in the recruitment of 200 students - 60% who are in need of a GED and 40% who currently hold a high school diploma or GED.

Those students enrolling in the GED program can earn a college certificate while at the same time earning their GED in designated pathways. 

Targeted pathways include:  Health Information Technician, CNA, Welding Helper, Office & Careers, Construction Helper and Automotive Lube Technician with stackable certificates in Pharmacy Technician, Emergency Medical Technician, Office & Careers, Constructional Technology, Welding and Automotive Technology.
