LSU Health Shreveport Faculty, Residents Organize Walk to Raise Awareness for Mental Health

LSU Health Shreveport Psychiatry Resident Poonam Awatramani, MD, wanted to find a public service project for all psychiatry residents with the goal of raising awareness of mental health and reducing the stigma associated with treatment. After enlisting the help of mental health advocate and School of Allied Health Professions Associate Dean Dr. Dennis Wissing and Clinical Trials Coordinator Angela Benedetto, Dr. Awatramani decided to organize a walk.

Community members were invited to join LSU Health Shreveport members for a fun walk for mental health awareness. The two-mile walk took place Saturday, May 10 starting at 8:30 am at Stoner Avenue Boat Launch, 857 East Stoner Avenue.

Funds raised will be donated to programs provided by the Northwest Louisiana Affiliate of National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), which was started a year ago by Dr. Wissing.
