Local law enforcement encouraging 4th of July safety

Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office will be conducting boat safety checks.
Local law enforcement is urging everyone to celebrate the 4th of July holiday safely on waterways and while lighting fireworks.

The Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office is expecting boat traffic to be heavy on the Red River and the Marine Patrol will be conducting safety checks. The checks will be routine to help ensure boats carry enough life jackets for occupants, and that audible devices and lights are properly working. Louisiana law requires anyone 16 or under to wear a life jacket when a boat is moving.

Traffic on the Red River will be shut down between the Texas Street bridge and the railroad bridge along the Shreveport/Bossier waterfront 30 minutes before the downtown firework show begins. The river will be reopened when the barge is declared safe following the firework show.

The Shreveport Police Department says it will be on the lookout for impaired drivers and anyone firing celebratory gunfire into the air. SPD is also urging safety while lighting personal fireworks displays. Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby to contain any small fires that occur and be aware of overhead tree branches.
