One person is dead following an overnight officer involved shooting in DeKalb, Texas.

Shawn Walraven, the Chief of Police for DeKalb, tells NBC 6 News around 12:40 a.m. on Monday morning his department received a phone call of a disturbance at a home in the 300 block of Pecan Street.

Walraven says one of his officers and a Bowie County Sheriffs' deputy arrived on scene and knocked at the front door of the home.

No one answered the initial knock and the DeKalb police officer, who was not identified by Walraven, walked around to the back of the home.

The officer knocked at the back door and when the door was opened, the suspect inside opened fire, striking the female officer in the leg.

Gun shots were returned and the suspect was fatally struck. Walraven did not know if the fatal shots were fired by his officer or the  Bowie County Sheriffs' deputy.

The identity of the suspect is not being released by authorities at this time.

The officer was taken to St. Michael's Hospital and treated for the gun shot. She was released from the facility earlier this morning.

The Texas Rangers are currently investigating the incident and will provide additional details throughout the day.
