Rod Richardson, Director of Communications for Mayor Cedric Glover's office, tells NBC 6 News a large portion of Public Works employees in the solid waste collection and disposal services did not show up for work on Monday morning.

Richardson says it is unclear at this point what prompted the employees to not show for work. He adds that the issue is being discussed in a City of Shreveport Department head meeting taking place at this hour.

NBC 6 News reports at least two dozen trash collection truck sit unmanned in the parking lot of the Public Works Solid Waste facility off Kings Highway this morning.

A Public Works solid waste collection and disposal services employee participating in today's no-show, who did not want to be identified, tells NBC 6's News the employees plan to not show up to work on Tuesday as well.

The organized no-show, according to the employee, is in direct response to the City of Shreveport's plan to purchase two street sweepers at a cost of $600,000.

The employee says Public Works solid waste collection and disposal services employees have been asking for a pay raise for over a year, yet were routinely told money was unavailable in the department's budget.

According to a statement from Mayor Glover's office, the street sweepers will be paid for by the Department of Public Works through a transfer of funds within its existing budget.
