Marshall father looking for answers in the death of his child

Police are waiting on autopsy results to shed more light on the death of 22 month-old Ja'keen Sanders.
Kendrick Sanders says he's in the dark about his own son's death.

"I don't know what happened," says Sanders.

Marshall Police tell us on Tuesday, May 6, 22-month old Ja'keen Sanders died in the care of his mother, Jameshia Cooks and her boyfriend, at the Best Western on Highway 59.

According to detectives, Cooks called 911 after she woke up and found Ja'keen unresponsive.

But so far no one knows how Ja'keen died.

"I don't know exactly what happened in there," says Sanders. "I'm hearing all stories that they woke up and the baby was dead on the floor, and I'm hearing the story that they woke up and the baby was wedged between a bed and dresser, so I really don't know what happened."

Sanders and Cooks are not together.

Sanders says he's been hearing all kinds of rumors, but nothing concrete from the mother or police.

"She hasn't told me nothing," says Sanders. "She never called my phone to let me know my child was dead. When I finally did talk to her yesterday, I asked her, she told me she didn't want to talk about it."

We reached out to Cooks for a comment, but she wasn't at home at the time. Plus, relatives say they don't have a comment at this time.

"All I want to know is what happened, and why did they let it happen," says Sanders.

Investigators say they won't have any more solid answers until an autopsy is complete, which could take up to two weeks.
