President Obama made a surprise visit to troops in Afghanistan Sunday.

"I'm here on a single mission that is to thank you for extraordinary service," he told those in attendance.

Mr. Obama commended those serving for their sacrifices and said he is hopeful that the U.S. will maintain a "limited military presence" in Afghanistan by year's end.

"Our combat mission will be over. America's war in Afghanistan will come to a responsible end," he said.

The president was on the ground just four hours and only spoke to Afghan President Hamid Karzai by phone after taking off for his return flight home.
