Shreveport Police are investigating an early-morning gunfight that left one man injured and another behind bars.
Jamaria Cornelious, 20, was taken into custody this morning and booked into the Shreveport City Jail. More arrests are expected as SPD detectives continue their investigation.
Just after 5 this morning (July 20, 2014), Shreveport Police patrol officers were called to the 2600 block of Claiborne Avenue relative to a shooting. When officers arrived, contact was made with a male victim suffering a gunshot wound to the face. The man, whose injuries were considered non life-threatening, was treated on scene by paramedics from the Shreveport Fire Department.
Shreveport Police Violent Crimes investigators were notified of the incident and responded to the crime scene. Preliminary information was received indicating two men had been shot while in the parking lot of the Cajun Inn motel; however it was later learned only one man had actually sustained injury.
Authorities learned the victim, identified as 19-year-old Javoria Sherman, along with Cornelious, were inside a vehicle parked at the Cajun Inn when a male armed with a shotgun reportedly opened fire in their direction. It was during this time, Cornelious began to exchange fire with the shotgun wielding suspect. Following the exchange of gunfire, the unknown suspect fled the scene.
Authorities located and seized two weapons at the scene, both believed to have been used in the crime. Cornelious was charged with a single count of Illegal Use of a Weapon for his alleged role in the caper, and subsequently booked into the Shreveport City Jail
