Popular broadcaster set to speak at college commencement

Wiley College welcomes Tavis Smiley as its keynote speaker at the 125th Baccalaureate and Commencement Convocation.
Wiley College welcomes Tavis Smiley as its keynote speaker at the 125th Baccalaureate and Commencement Convocation.

Smiley is the host of the Tavis Smiley Show on PBS and the daily online radio program "Tavis Talks".  He is also an author, publisher and philanthropist.

Smiley will speak at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3 in the Alumni Gymnasium on Wiley's campus.

President and CEO of Wiley College Dr. Haywood L. Strickland said,  "He is an inspiration to any young person, to any person, really, who has goals they wish to accomplish or dreams they'd like to see come true.  Our students and Wiley family look forward to hearing him speak Saturday."

Smiley's achievements have earned him numerous awards and honorary doctorate degrees, including one from his alma mater, Indiana University. 

TIME magazine named Smiley as one of "The World's 100 Most Influential People" and last month he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
